Transformation. Endings. Death. She brings you into alignment with your soul and cuts away abuse, toxic people and stagnant relationships. Be ready for new beginnings.
Kali is a fierce Hindu warrior goddess who is all about ushering us through releasing situations not for our highest good, ultimately honouring who we are and bringing forth our personal power.
As the Goddess who presides over death, change and transformation, in a way we are in a 'Kali time' in our collective history right now as we have just witnessed an inordinate amount of death and endings - in terms of people literally losing their lives through the pandemic - either directly from the virus or from mental health issues or domestic abuse as a side-effect of the lockdown, huge sweeping changes and endings in people's lives and how they operate, people losing their livelihoods as they know it and whole industries or sectors of society completely brought to a standstill or wiped out overnight globally. As we start to navigate a new post-Covid world we're being ushered through this Ending into a New Beginning, a collective transformation, as we collectively look around at the pieces of things that have crumbled and work out how to rebuild a new society with Kali standing at our side.
Kali, as fierce and frightening and perhaps 'unpalatable' as she looks on the surface with her lovely necklace of skulls, symbolising 'The Head' or the Ego - the illusory, self-centred view of reality, that she is in charge of slaying is actually the most suuuuper loving and empowering Goddess you'll come into contact with if you're lucky enough to be dosed with her medicine. But, I get it, when I first had my Kali 'awakening' or when she first came to my attention when I had a highly toxic relationship pulled out from under my feet, I basically reacted somewhat....
'Why couldn't I be working with Aphrodite? Or one of those other floatey, pretty Goddesses? Why KALI, she's SCARY!' I bemoaned. This is the thing with the Goddess, though, and part of the healing of the Collective Feminine Shadow. The Goddess or Shakti (Divine Feminine energy) does not - and should not - present in a pretty package of slim, usually white, sultry, docile image of Western perfection. That is not the Goddess at all. That is the Patriarchal white-washed, sanitised, sexualised and appropriated version of a Goddess. And an image that collectively we still need to release in order to reclaim the WHOLENESS of the Feminine in all her facets - for both men and women to come into wholeness within.
In a way, that's why I've come to love Kali because my rebellious side just loves that she's the exact antithesis of that - all fierce, blue-skinned, sword-toting, skull-wearing, red-tongued, crazy-haired, inflamed-eyed beast of a Goddess.
Not to mention the fact that in many of the mythic representations of her, she's standing with her foot on top of her male counterpart, Shiva, who is laying down - extremely provocative imagery (And no, this wasn't because, as some Patriarchal tellings of her myth have it, that she had gone 'deranged' and was standing on him after going blood-thirsty from a battle and needed to be 'brought back under control' blah blah) This was, in fact, symbolic of her Shakti, her divine feminine power holding strong over Ego as symbolised by Shiva.
She is the force, the power, the energy that keeps our unchecked Ego from running rampant and ultimately sending us to our destruction. The fact that Shiva is laying down with his chest turned towards her is symbolic of the ultimate surrender of the Ego or The Mind to Shakti or Spirit. Ego is not dead, it's still THERE - just surrendered and in SERVICE to Shakti. Just as there is collectively a global awakening going on and the collective is being brought into service of Shakti, of divine feminine energy, of Mother Earth - if we do not do this we will lead ourselves through Collective Ego and individual and corporate interests running amok, toward the complete destruction of Earth. Kali will not let this happen and will force us to our knees, to slow down, to take stock, to go through abrupt change and things being pulled away from us until we start transforming how we live in respect of the Feminine.
Kali is the Queen of 'pulls-the-proverbial-rug-out-from-under-your-feet' moments. Anything false, anything not in your highest alignment, anything your ego (your conditioning and programming and the mask you wear to protect your inner, authentic self) is clinging to, is identifying with, is hiding behind, when it's time - usually when we LEAST expect it and when we're MOST attached to something - out that flaming sword of hers comes and cuts it away.
For those unsuspecting souls - and I was one - this feels like a giant slap in the fact at the time. "But I NEEDED that (insert whatever it is - job, relationship, addiction, distraction)" we'll insist. We might kick and scream and try to attach more as we feel it being pulled away. But the more we scramble trying to attach, the harder Kali will pull on that rug til we're on our knees, she has our attention - standing on us, standing on our Ego, on our 'But I know best' swagger - when we can let go of that, hold our hands up and say 'ok idk, maybe there's a less painful way to do things ....🤷?' - THEN she can bring us into alignment with our soul. Usually we'll look back, sometimes years later, and realise we dodged a giant bullet. Or rather, let's face it, we were neeeever gonna dodge the bullet on our own 💁 but Kali pulled us away from the bullet where we were blindly careening towards it.
In that way, despite her scary representation, she's actually the most utterly LOVING, FIERCELY protective Mother Goddess. The rug-pulling-out-from-feet that often happens when Kali comes into our life, is from love and protection, not some mean, cosmic design against us (even though it might feel like that at the time). That sword of hers? It's only used to cut away abuse, toxic people and stagnant relationships or situations. We just might not be able to see that at the time because our ego self, our false self is so infatuated with what that situation is ostensibly giving us.
It's like that Steve Jobs quote - 'you can only connect the dots backwards, never forwards'. That's Kali at work. When things are ending, often senselessly and we're left on our knees reeling from the proverbial Tower in our lives falling, wondering 'where did I go wrong? I could have SWORN that was the right path / person/ thing for me and now it's just been TAKEN??
- in that moment we're being called to surrender. To trust in a higher power. To allow what is to break and dissolve away even when it makes NO friggin sense on the surface. Even when we were sure logically we knew what we were doing and where we were going. Even when it really hurts.
In fact, the more painful it is, the more power there is available to us on the other side of that pain (not that that is always much comfort to us when we're in the middle of the fire of things burning away but Kali is not the Goddess of comfort, she's the Goddess of Transformation and transformation is never comfortable ). The alchemy. The transmutation. The rebirth. From the ending of the old, clearing the space for the emergence of the new. The force that ultimately propels us to use our pain or what we've overcome - whether addictions, toxic attachments, homelessness, poverty, illness as FERTILISER for our self-empowerment and the empowerment of others - that's Kali's ultimate magic.
