Introduction to Selene, Greek Goddess of the Moon

In Greek mythology, Selene is the Moon Goddess - the most beautiful and feminine of the Goddesses in her pantheon. Her name comes from the word selas (σέλας), meaning "brightness". She presides over: Imagination, Intuition, Feminine Matters, Increased Psychic Awareness, Emotions, Changeable nature, travel, Wild Nature, Dreams, Illusions.

She is the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, and sister of the sun-god Helios, and Eos, goddess of the dawn. Both Selene and another associated Moon Goddess Artemis were also associated with Hecate, Goddess of Magic & Witchcraft and all three were regarded as lunar goddesses, although only Selene was regarded as the personification of the moon itself.

Selene spent her time driving a Moon Chariot led by white horses across the heavens — lighting the night sky with her great and glowing beauty. It is said that her energy is felt most strongly around the time of the Full Moon—the lunar peak, though the Greeks worshipped Selene at the new and full moons because of her association with agriculture, her influence on the tides and the cycles of each month.

The Moon is associated with the Mother and feminine energy in general. The Moon represents both our inner child and our inner mother, our inner Feminine voice or Yin energy - whether we are male or female. It is responsive, receptive and reflective. The Moon drives our spontaneous, instinctual and subconscious reactions. In Astrology, our Moon sign is the part of us that drives our underlying, emotional, inner personality.

Selene also presided over moon cycles and fertility and mothers who were eager to conceive, invoked her for fertility, or to alleviate the pain of labour and birth - both physical or metaphysically speaking such as birthing a creative project. Selene in her embodiment as the Moon in a dark sky, also stands for the potential to light the way for others.

Selene was revered as the Goddess of Guidance - helping mankind 'see' in the darkness and in that way she is the Goddess of Intuition or of our third eye chakra - the energy associated with our intuitive insight, inner guidance and 'sixth sense' abilities or psychic powers. She is often called upon by anyone wanting to tap into or strengthen their powers of divination.

She was also associated with dreams and was sometimes called the patron of illusions because she was in charge of dreams - it was said that calling on her before sleep would give people solutions to their problems via dreams whilst they were sleeping! Pretty cool huh - like your own little personal dream oracle!

She brings to her followers the ability to lucid dream, receive messages through dreams, interpret those dreams and tap into divination powers.

The Myth of Selene & Endymion

Though she was known to have had many love affairs with gods, she is most well known for her enduring love affair with the gorgeous mortal Endymion. The legend goes that she saw the handsome Aeolian shepherd sleeping upon Mt. Latmus one night and, fascinated by his mortal beauty, fell madly in love. Fortunately, her being the most beautiful and feminine of all the Goddesses, Endymion pretty much fell completely head over heels for her too.

However, being an immortal Goddess, Selene was unable to come to terms with the fact that one day Endymion would pass away as mortals were wont to do. So, the Moon Goddess went to Zeus, one of her lovers at the time and pleaded with him to grant Endymion immortality. Zeus obliged, but, of course, being Zeus, Selene’s wish came with a steep price - her lovely mortal man could be granted his immortality, but it would be at the cost of living out the rest of eternity inside a deep slumber from which he’d never wake.

But Endymion accepted these terms in order to be with the beautiful Goddess. And Selene, ever the devoted lover to her now immortal man, would visit the sleeping Endymion every night—shining both her light and her love upon his eternal rest.

It is believed that she would visit him inside his dreams, with some myths stating that it was through these very dream visits that she was able to birth over 50 daughters (who would later become known as The Menai—representing the 50 lunar months of the Olympiad cycle).

As a result of this myth, Selene came to also represent and preside over long-lasting love relationships. Young lovers used to pray to Selene and her guise as the Moon for a happy marriage. Her visit can herald the coming of an important relationship - it could be an important friendship or romantic love. Selene calls you to remember love and unity is the highest frequency and triumphs over all. A strong union is one of the greatest gifts that Selene can bestow.
